The safe, simple way to demonstrate your language skills during the Covid-19 situation

If you are applying to an educational institution, IELTS Indicator is the online test that you can use to safely demonstrate your language skills during the Covid-19 shutdown when it’s not possible to take the test at an official test centre.

Please note that IELTS Indicator is not accepted for migration to Australia, Canada or New Zealand.

Key features of IELTS Indicator

It covers the four skills

The online test assesses each of the IELTS skill areas: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The Speaking test is delivered via video call with a fully qualified and trained examiner, maintaining IELTS focus on assessing conversational English proficiency.

It’s an official IELTS product

IELTS Indicator is a timed test that matches the structure of an in-person test. It remains reliable, fair and accurate, because it uses standard IELTS marking procedures and official IELTS examiners.

It gives you an indicative score

You will get your scores within seven days – both an indicative score for each section and an overall band score.

It is not a substitute for the in-person IELTS

Once testing resumes, your university or education provider may ask you to take the in-person IELTS, even if you have taken IELTS Indicator.

How IELTS Indicator works

It’s a live, online test with an allocated start time and duration – to take it you need a suitable computer with reliable internet access.

The Listening, Reading and Writing parts of the test need to be completed in one sitting, with the Speaking test happening a few days before or after the other sections.

Who accepts IELTS Indicator?

Universities and other educational establishments can use IELTS Indicator to assess the standard of applicants’ language abilities at a time when test takers are unable to access the in-person IELTS. Please check with your university on whether they accept it before booking.
